Schools, middle schools, high schools, and vocational training centers in Moorea

The island of Moorea has an educational network covering all levels of schooling, from primary to secondary, as well as support systems for young people on adapted courses. Moorea has nine public primary schools, spread across the island's various bays and valleys, and one private Montessori primary school. They welcome students from kindergarten to fifth grade and provide local schooling throughout the territory. Secondary education is provided by two public middle schools, located in Afareaitu and Paopao, which accept students from sixth to ninth grade. The island is also home to the Opunohu Agricultural High School, a secondary school specializing in agriculture and environmental studies, which welcomes students from Moorea and other islands. Moorea also has a Center for Young Adolescents (CJA). This facility welcomes young people who are struggling or have dropped out of the traditional school system and offers tailored educational support focused on re-engagement, learning, and integration. From high school onwards, some students must continue their education in Tahiti. This involves daily ferry trips, with early morning and late evening schedules, which are very restrictive. Students have to cope with the first crossings in the morning and the return trips at the end of the day, which represents a daily travel time of more than 3 hours and impacts their school and family life. In total, several thousand students are enrolled each year in Moorea, across all levels. All of these institutions play a central role in the social, educational, and territorial life of the island. The Polynesian education system follows the structure of the French national education system, with compulsory schooling from the start of school until the age of 16.
