Scientific research in Moorea – CRIOBE and Gump Research Station

Moorea is home to two internationally recognized scientific research facilities: CRIOBE and the Gump Research Station of the University of California, Berkeley. Their presence connects the island to research networks in the Pacific and beyond. CRIOBE (Centre de Recherches Insulaires et Observatoire de l’Environnement) is a French laboratory specializing in the study of coral reefs and tropical ecosystems. Its work focuses on marine biodiversity, lagoon functioning, the effects of climate change, and the relationship between human activities and natural environments. The laboratory also develops scientific dissemination, training, and awareness-raising activities in connection with the territory, notably through Fare Natura. The Gump Research Station, affiliated with the University of California, Berkeley, is a university research and teaching station. It welcomes international researchers and students as part of scientific and educational programs. The research conducted focuses on the terrestrial and marine ecosystems of Moorea and French Polynesia, as well as long-term environmental dynamics. These two institutions contribute to the production of scientific knowledge in Moorea, host university programs, and promote understanding of local and global environmental issues. Their activities help make the island a recognized center for study and observation in the field of environmental sciences.
